A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the South Atlantic Ocean on Friday, May 2, 2025, at 9:58 am local time (GMT -3). The epicenter was approximately 65 miles off the coast of Chile and Argentina. This resulted in a stronger impact on areas near the epicenter compared to a deeper quake of similar magnitude. Coastal areas within 185 miles of the epicenter were evacuated, and Chilean authorities issued a tsunami warning for Chile’s remote Magallanes region and the Chilean Antarctic Territory, with precautionary measures also taken in Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego region. The quake, which occurred at a depth of 10km, has triggered four smaller aftershocks in the region. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Chile may face tsunami waves up to 9ft tall, while Antarctica could see waves of up to 3ft.
In contrast, the 2010 Chilean earthquake, which had a magnitude of 8.8, caused significant damage and loss of life. This earthquake led to widespread destruction, with economic losses totaling $30 billion USD or 17% of Chile’s GDP. Twelve million people, or 75% of the population, were in areas that felt strong shaking. Despite the extensive damage, only 521 fatalities were confirmed, with 56 people still missing and presumed dead in the tsunami.
