On February 26, 2025, Gregg Roman, the executive director of the Middle East Forum (MEF), delivered critical congressional testimony that revealed over $122 million in approved grants had inadvertently supported radical organizations linked to terrorism. These funds, funneled through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), have gone to entities affiliated with Hamas, Hezbollah, and Al-Qaeda. Roman’s assertion that ‘there’s a fox loose in the henhouse of our foreign aid system’ underscored the seriousness of this situation.
Concerns Regarding National Security
Invited by Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, Roman urged a halt to new foreign aid obligations, advocating for an audit to assess and rectify this crisis. His testimony emphasized the necessity of examining the aid structure to eliminate inefficiencies and safeguard U.S. interests. “We’re not just talking about waste, fraud, and abuse—this is a national security problem,” he declared, signifying that the consequences extend far beyond financial mismanagement.
Research Backing His Claims
The findings presented by Roman stem from comprehensive research conducted by Samuel Westrop, director of MEF’s Islamist Watch program, along with other investigative efforts by the organization. Their research indicates that U.S. foreign aid has not only supported organizations hostile to American values but has also exacerbated conflicts in volatile regions. These alarming insights challenge policymakers to reconsider the implications of their financial contributions and the entities they support.
